CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEES AND
DEPENDENTS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Founded 1984
- HISTORY
Civil
Service employees established the Civil Service Employees and Dependents
Scholarship Fund in 1984 for Civil Service employees and their
dependents. This
scholarship program was originally conceived and implemented by Marjorie
Beasley and Judy Barker.
Postulating the concept of employees helping employees to succeed, the
goals and objectives of the Program were designed to assist Civil Service
employees and their dependents to achieve educational goals by providing
selected recipients with financial assistance in their pursuit of higher
education at an accredited college or university. In the early years, a number
of campus units including the Staff Human Resources gave in-kind donations
of time and materials to further the goals of this fund so a firm footing
could be developed.
The Civil Service Employees and Dependents Scholarship Fund was
established by donations from Civil Service employees, retirees, the
Secretariat, the Classified Employees Association, the Fraternal Order of
Police and a number of fund-raising events.
HOW IS IT FUNDED
The
dependence on generous donations by interested donors continues today.
Primarily
the program is funded by individual or group contributions and gifts made to
honor a particular employee (upon retirement, for example). This scholarship
program is made possible through donations from employees, dependents,
employee groups, retirees, various fund-raising activities, and former
scholarship recipients.
A tax-deductible donation is welcome at any time.
Employees may donate through payroll deduction or by check (made
payable to the U of I Foundation/CSE&DSF).
PURPOSE
The purpose is to provide financial assistance to UIUC
Civil Service employees and their dependents in their pursuit of higher
education at an accredited college or university.
VALUE
Typically
eight scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarships will be equally
divided between employee and dependent applicants unless there are an
insufficient number of applications in either category.
The number awarded and the value of each scholarship will depend on the
interest pool earned from the endowment fund.
Individual dependent scholarship awards will be 1.5 times greater than
individual employee scholarship awards.
AVAILABILITY
The scholarship applications will be made available in
mid-February with awards made by mid-June.
EMPLOYEE ELIGIBILITY

the presentation the scholarship is forfeited.
*Scholarship funds awarded to recipients who attend the University of
Illinois are credited directly to the recipient's student account.
-
- RECIPIENT RESPONSIBILITY
- In the event that a recipient is unable to enter
or return to school in the fall semester immediately following the receipt
of this scholarship, all cash must be returned to the Scholarship fund.
The donors that make this program possible heavily rely on the
ethical and fiscal responsibility of the recipient to ensure the monetary
award is used in achieving the goals and objectives as declared on the
application. The signatures on the
application serve as a contract that the scholarship will be used as
pledged.
